business mileage vs commute? and flights question. mileage vs commute? and flights question. Hi all,
I am originally from the UK, but have been here a little while now. I have always submitted my tax via turbo tax, as its pretty simple and i don't understand enough about it to do it any other way. Normally i just do the basics and haven't given much though to expenses, etc before. However this year i would like to look at it closer.
I work as a professional sports coach. I have an office i go to some days, and then various facilities where i actually coach.
My question is what can i can claim as business expense (that i can deduct) and commute expenses (that i can't)?
If i go to the office, i assume that is just a commute, but then my journey to coach (since this is generating income) would be a business expense? And then my journey from the facility back home, would be the commute again? Can anyone confirm this as correct?
If however I am not in the office and drive directly to the facility where i am coaching, is that now just my commute? or a business expense?
Last question.. I am essentially living here, but am not a permanent resident. I have a visa for a set number of years, and maintain a residence in the UK. I try to go home 1-2 times a year for things like xmas, special events, etc. Am i able to deduct the flights on the basis that i am flying to the US to work? If so, would i just deduct the portion of the flight that is TO the US, not the one back to UK? Or can i not deduct at all?
Any responses appreciated. |
