How can I dispute a 1099-misc? Hello,
First a little back story.
I was laid off in 2008. I had unemployment insurance for one of my credit cards and I had used it a few times but it became increasingly difficult to get the company to pay my bill so I stopped using it after a few months. Fast forward to 2011, I started working again and filled for bankruptcy and it was finalized in January 2012 and the debt on that credit card was discharged. I just recently received a 1099-misc form for a bulk payment that the company made in June 2014. I had previously received one and submitted it with my 2009 taxes.
I called the company and they said that they audited some old accounts and they determined that my original claim could receive some additional payments and that's why I received the 1099.
So my question is this, is there a way that I can dispute this 1099-misc on the grounds that there was no debt that required them to make a payment on? I could be wrong, but this seems like it could almost be insurance fraud if the credit card company knowingly accepted an insurance payment for a debt that no longer exists.
Thanks for your time. |
