College Student Deduction-Divorced There is a presumption minor children are allocated to the parent with greater custody for child deduction. Yet when the child is a full-time college student and no longer a minor, I read the parent who provides the greater of financial support for the college student has the right to claim the child. I am divorced, and have a child in college. He is completely out of the house living on campus even for summer months. My ex and I split his tuition, however. Since I am employed at the institution my child attends, I qualify for a tuition grant . I apply for the grant and because of my years of service I am given a 50% tuition grant to pay for towards my child's tuition. Will the tuition grant that I qualify and awarded be counted as financial support I provide for my child's tuition ? The amount which is not covered by the tuition grant is split 50/50 between me and and my former wife. Thoughts? |
