filing status

My son filled his taxes out incorrectly. He is a student, but listed himself as single on his return instead of dependent upon me. So here is what I think we need to do:

(1) he has to amend his return and pay any taxes due

(2) I have to wait for the amendments to take effect

(3) Since today is March 8 it will probably take more that 5 weeks for amendments to take effect. I should file for extension

(4) I wait for his amendments to take effect and then I send in my returns.

Can someone verify that this is what needs to be done?

Thanks

As a dependent, if he needs to file his return, he needs to file his return as single; if your child is an unmarried dependent student, he must file a tax return if his earned and/or unearned income exceeds certain limits. Even if your child does not have to file, he should file a federal income tax return if he can get money back; for example, he had federal income tax withheld from his pay or he qualifies for the earned income tax credit.
