I am amending my 2014 federal return because my wife and I mistakenly chose the wrong filing status. I filed head of household with our son and she filed single.
Anyway, I amended my federal return to married filing jointly but do I need to amend my state return as well? ======>yes; incorrect filing status on your state return is common reason why your state tax return needs to be amended since your submitted state tax return or state tax obligation is affected by the filing status change made to your federal 1040.
The liability to state is only changing a small amount (in my favor) and I really don't want to do the paperwork just to get an additional $70 back! Will federal automatically notify California of my new filing status?====>> No UNLESS your 1040 is accepted electronically(however, you can not efile your 1040X). In general, if you efile both fed and your state returns to the IRS, then, the IRS electronically forwards your state return to the tax authority in your state. however, You must file a paper Form 1040X. You need to mail your state return/ a copy of federal return to the address for you state. |
