My new job forgot to take out state tax but it seems I owe more than what I pay now in state taxes So I started a new job in june after a month and a half of receiving unemployment after getting laid off from another job. At the first job my state taxes were withheld but at my second job they forgot to take it out. After I notified my company, I started receiving checks with the state tax withheld and that amount over a year is way more than what I now owe to the state for last year. My first job I made 70k, at the second one I made 75k, and now in 2017, I'm making 77.5k. My state taxes are currently $336 a month x 12 = $4032. I owe the state $3558 for 7 months of unpaid state taxes as well as taxes on my 2015 state refund of $590. I also recieved $2125 in unemployment, but when I delete that in turbo tax, I still owe $3346. Even at my higher income, the state tax would be 336x7 = $2352. That's a thousand dollars more, what gives? I am not itemizing deductions or anything crazy - I am single with no dependents, no credits, no other income |
