My situation is this; Filed return using standard deduction. it is later determined that taxpayer can itemize. Would like to correct/amend the return to claim a refund and hope to file before the April 18 filing deadline. I don't think i can file an amended return since it is before the filing date. Can a corrected return be paper filed with an explanation now or do i have to wait and file an amended return after April 18.
Thank you. |
Although amended returns can be submitted immediately after the original, if you are amending to ask for a bigger refund, the IRS asks that you wait until you have received your first refund check before filing a 1040X. Generally, in order to receive an adjusted refund or a credit, you must submit the 1040X within 3 years of the date you filed the original return or 2 years after you paid the tax (whichever is later). Asfaras I know the approximately 3 or 4 years ago the IRS said that TPs?d be able efile 1040X however no I do no think so; the IRS still will not accept an e-file amended tax return. If you need to amend your return after you have already submitted an e-filed return, you must print and mail your amended return to the IRS for consideration.
