" As just being an employee with a large commute, can I claim some of this on my 2010 tax return?" Sorry, No; in general, commuting to and from work is a nondeductible personal expense no matter how far you drive. As you can see, these costs are your personal commuting expenses. You cannot deduct commuting expenses no matter how far your home is from your regular place of work. There are exceptions, however, when you, as an employee, are required to travel outside your metropolitan area on a temporary basis.
