Moved to a new state, how do I apportion my income tax?

On 11/15/10 I moved from DFW, Texas to Syracuse, New York, leaving a job behind. My annual after-tax income from that job was about $26K. I am still unemployed in New York.

On 12/14, I received my final paycheck from the Texas job, for just over $500. On 12/15, I received a retirement fund payout of just over $2000.

I just started filing my return through TaxAct Online, and it's telling me I owe income tax to New York for almost $900. I believe this is because NY is trying to tax me for my entire Texas income, instead of just the pay I received after moving here.

Can anyone please tell me how I'm supposed to apportion my taxes for two separate states? I'm baffled and pretty much a newbie at filing. I appreciate any help, thanks in advance!

” how I'm supposed to apportion my taxes for two separate states?”---->Your income that you earned in Texas is NOT subject to NY tax; you need to pay taxes to NY on your income that you earned ONLY in NY as nonresident of NY, then you can claim your NY taxes on your Federal return( as long as you claim your itemized deductions as itemized deductions on Sch A> your standard deduction,$5,700). Texas is one of only seven states that does not tax individual wage income. So, you do not pay taxes on your income that you earned in Texas. It depends on the situation if you pay taxes(federal tax) on your retirement pensionpayouts. You may get taxed on your Soc Sec payouts.
