“ I think I just had a negligent manager or something to that effect. What can I do about this? I don't want to pay anything since I caught this error and submitted multiple w4s to them.’---> First of all, you can change your W-4 as many times as you want. As you can see, your ER uses the information from your Form W-4 to compute the amount of income to withhold from your wages.Firstt possible scenario is that you, as an EE, may have claimed your withholding allowances on your W-4. Claiming many withholding allowances on W-4 can reduce the withholding of income taxes( even to zero) on your wages and result in big federal tax liability on 1040. The number of withholding allowances claimed on your W-4 MAY differ from the number of allowances on your federal tax retutn on 104. This is what I mean. However, You won't have a problem if the taxes withheld so far that year are more than previous year's total tax liability. Anyway, you should always verify your taxes with every paycheck. Another possible scenario , I guess, is that if you think that it is your negligent manager’s responsibility, then you may need to ask your boss what is going on. Ask your ER to review your tax situation with you and payroll - if you have payroll department. If you don't have the money to pay the taxes and don't want to get a loan, ask your boss for a salary advance to cover it. Pay them back on an installment basis. |
