“I have SS income of $13800 and a small pension of 800 per year. I have no other income and file single. Am I required to file a tax return even though I don't owe any taxes?”---->I guess basically, it depends on your provisional income level. For example, assume that your income is only your Soc Sec benefits, $13,800 and the small pension income, $800,( for your pension income,if you get a pension from work where you paid Social Security taxes, then that pension will not affect your Social Security benefits), then none of your Soc Sec benefits, $13,800 is TAXABLE.
1. $13,800; your total Soc Sec income
2. $6,900; one half of line 1
3. $5,250; taxable income on 1040; $13,800+$800( if I assume your pension is also taxable)
4. $0; no tax exempt inocme
5. $12,150;add lines 2,3 and 4
6. $0;all adjustment of AGI
7. $12,150; subtract 6 from 5
8. $25,000; statutorily given
9. $0- No Soc Sec benefits are taxable; subtract 8 from 7 |
