“Turbotax says I can file federal as joint with my wife. But for state I have to file separately since I have to file state taxes for both MD and CT while she does not. Turbotax calculates that I get $200 back in CT taxes. While for MD I actually OWE $4500. how can that be?”----->I am NOT familiar with TB Tax software;however, since there is NO state tax reciprocal agreement between MD and CT, you , as a part year resident of MD, need to file your MD return on your income that you earned in MD and also need to file your CT return as a part year resident of CT ONLY on your income that you earned in CT. You can’t claim your MD tax that you paid to MD on your CT return .However, you can claim your taxes that you paid to CT and MD on your federal return. Since your wife had no MD income, you can file your MD return in separation and you need to file your CT return as MFJ.
“I think what is going on is that TurboTax is importing my total wage for the year (from the federal return) and seeing that I only paid $700 in taxes in MD, its saying that I owe 4500 more. Can anyone figure out whats going on?”-As described above, as you said, you need to file two state returns; MD return as a MFS and CT return as MFJ. |
