IRS is tightening rules on issuing individual tax ID Numbers! Generally speaking, folks who do not have social security numbers and are not eligible to obtain them from the government, can request a special ID numbers from the IRS. In this manner, these individuals can file their tax returns to obtain tax refunds or make payments to satisfy their tax liability.
Effective this year, the IRS is now requiring applicants "to supply originals of birth certificates or passports, or copies certified by issuing agencies." This means notarized copies are not going to be accepted anymore!
Per the IRS, these individuals will still be able to claim the refundable child tax credit, and in fact, the IRS has actually refunded over $4 billiion in child care credits to "unauthorized workers in 2010". |
