Tax Payer Advocate Services- NOT HELPFUL I experienced an auditing Issue a while back and while doing my research ran across a post that was a life saver and saved me from what could have turned out to be an Auditing Horror.
I just wanted to take a moment out to "pay forward" and post a helpful bit for anyone else who may be experiencing something similar.
The Taxpayer Advocate Reps are actually NOT unbiased at all. They work with the IRS auditors and DO NOT have your best interest at heart.
At one point my TAR actually stopped working on my case because I didn't want to "make a deal" and pay part of the "supposed" amount due.
The REP did not work with me to help meet my deadlines and it appeared as if she wanted the deadline to expire so that I would have no other choice but to follow her suggestion and pay amounts that I honestly did not owe.
You would be much better off hiring a tax attorney or accountant. Anyone BUT the Taxpayer Advocate Reps.
Once I stopped waiting for them to file the necessary paperwork and fill out the necessary forms that I wanted and not that they tried to force me to do, I was successful with my appeal and didn't not get taken to the cleaners.
