Temporary Living Expenses - with a 2nd residence My permanent home is in Maryland. I own a home there and my wife continues to live there and work there.
At Christmas of 2012, I was "temporarily" assigned to work in Alabama for 6 months. I worked there until June and was again "temporarily" assigned to work in Tennessee for another 6 months. This means that I will not be living in my "home" state Maryland for the entirety of 2013.
Which state(s) do I file my income taxes with?
I also receive compensation from my company for living expenses incurred while living away from my permanent home (I own a house that I pay a mortgage on). Is this taxable income or can I write it off for having to get an apartment, living in a hotel while waiting for the apartment, moving expenses etc.?
Can I also write off plane tickets to go back to Maryland to visit my wife / return to my place of work after visiting home?
Also, I have to complete the following form and check "yes" or "no" to the statement - which should I check? I am incurring duplicate living expenses due to this assignment and I believe that my "facts and circumstances" support that my assignment will be treated as a "temporary" assignment for tax purposes, and that any payments or reimbursements for temporary assignment travel expenses should not be reported as taxable income or subjected to income tax or other payroll tax withholdings.
YES_____(Nontaxable) NO_____(Taxable)
