Paying taxes on winning an item Hello all. I hope I'm posting this in the right place! Last summer, I won a grill online, and the ARV is $7,899.00. I received the 1099 in the mail today, and when I entered it onto my 1040, it realllllllly lowered the amount of our refund (by $1,200). Is there any way to get around this? This is a beautiful grill, but a) I sold it, and b) it's not even manufactured anymore. Is there a way to get the ARV lowered? I read online that if you can get proof that the grill isn't worth that much, then you can fill out an extra form for the IRS, but what constitutes as "proof" of this grill's worth? |
